Ian Hooper - Director

Ian has more than 30 years of experience in the practice and training of healthcare, manual handling and first aid, and has provided these and other legal compliance training to clients throughout the local area. This began with 15 years in the Royal Army Medical Corps being trained as a Combat Medic Technician (equivalent to a civilian paramedic), amongst other things. He then built on these skills working for Thames Ambulance and as a support worker, including working with people who have physical, mental and learning disabilities, including challenging behaviour. He also worked for several different companies in the Health Care, Security, Food Industry and Building Sectors gaining practical knowledge that could then translate into effective training for others.

From the field to the classroom

Ian also enjoyed the rewarding challenge of passing on his knowledge and skills to others by working at Colchester Institute as a tutor and placement coordinator in the Health and Social Care department. This was then the precursor to setting up IDH Training and supplying quality training to keep companies and their clients up-to-date and in line with current legislation.

To ensure the highest standards of training, Ian is a registered First Aid / Health and Safety Trainer with Qualsafe and Highfield’s Awarding Body of Compliance.  He keeps up to date with current and future changes in legislation by receiving emails form the awarding bodies and by attending trade Seminars as well as gaining further useful qualifications through self-study.

Ruth Oldham Consultant Trainer

Ruth Oldham

Ruth has a varied wealth of experience. After working as a care assistant in an elderly care facility during her university holidays, she started working as a qualified Dietitian in 2001 in the North East of England, covering fields such as elderly medicine, ICU, general medicine clinics and outpatient care, all of which gave her a rounded foundation of knowledge and experience. She specialised early on in diabetes care, including prenatal clinics, GP clinics and outpatient care, grounding her in this field. In 2004, Ruth entered community dietetics in a deprived area, working alongside the education sector, supporting school meals, special diets and continuing with diabetes care.

Health care to Education

By 2007, she decided to have a change of pace and taught English to university students in China for 3 years which built on her love of different cultures. On her return to the UK she specialised in IELTS courses, designing and running these successfully in the charity Action Foundation in Newcastle. During this time, her knowledge of medical issues helped considerably when teaching mainly medical professional students wanting to work in the UK. She was also heavily involved in International Student work, supporting local students from all over the world during their time in the UK.

Due to family needs, she moved to Colchester in 2015 as a carer to her disabled father while starting her own business teaching IELTS online via her website, www.myIELTStutor.co.uk

Her passion is for helping people be the best they can, whether educationally or otherwise, which shows through her fun, informative teaching style.
